MESQUITE, Texas – Dallas College Eastfield men's basketball team will participate in a Coaches versus Cancer event at its home game Wednesday, Jan. 24.

The Harvester Bees will host Dallas College Brookhaven in a Dallas Athletic Conference matchup. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.

Coaches vs. Cancer is a nationwide basketball event in conjunction with the National Association of Basketball Coaches that takes place each year to raise awareness for cancer. It is also a fundraising effort coordinated by the American Cancer Society to generate funds to assist in the fight against cancer.

Eastfield head coach Dexter Young's father passed away from cancer in 2012. His mother and sister are breast cancer survivors.

"Coaches vs. Cancer is important to me because it is a chance to honor my late father, as well as my mother and sister," Young said. "My father was instrumental in my basketball career as a player and coach, so it's a very special experience to honor him through this event."

Coaches will wear suits and sneakers during the game as part of the event. The Coaches vs. Cancer event runs throughout the week at amateur level games around the country.

"People will see my coaches and I wearing suits and sneakers, and hopefully be moved to learn more about Coaches vs. Cancer, and maybe even donate to the cause," Young said. "I want to get involved to increase awareness, and help raise money to contribute to cancer research. My hope is that our fans of all ages, particularly our young people, become as informed as possible about ways to prevent, detect and treat cancer."

This is the first year Eastfield will participate in the event.

"It's important for Eastfield to participate to show our support to those fighting cancer, the brave survivors and their families," Young said. "The Eastfield basketball team has made community service an important part of our program, and the Coaches vs. Cancer game and activities give us another way to bring this important issue to the forefront."

Donations will be accepted until mid-June. To date, over $33,000 has been raised for the cause, with a goal of $500,000.
