Rimm Named Head Men's Basketball Coach at Eastfield
MESQUITE, Texas – Dallas College Eastfield named Byron Rimm II as its head men's basketball coach.
Rimm was a former head men's basketball coach at Prairie View A&M University, Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis and Jarvis Christian College. He spent one year as the women's basketball head coach at Texas College. As a head coach, he's won 197 games. He became the winningest coach in program history at Prairie View with 115 victories.
"We are super excited to announce the hiring of Byron Rimm II," Eastfield Athletic Director Anthony Fletcher said. "Coach Rimm has led two different NCAA Division I programs, and has coached against some of the top DI programs in the nation. He has also been an assistant coach for other DI and junior college programs throughout the country. He has developed an NBA player, multiple NBA G League players and many other overseas professional players."
Rimm served as an assistant coach at Houston Christian University in 2021-22. Prior to that, he was the head coach at IUPUI from 2019-21, following one season as associate head coach with the Jaguars. In his first season at IUPUI, the Jaguars won 16 games.
In 2017-18, Rimm was an assistant coach at the University of California, Riverside. A year earlier, he served as the director of operations at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, which went 24-12, advancing to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament championship game.
Rimm's time at Prairie View spanned from 2006-16. In 2012-13, he guided the Panthers to the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament championship game for the first time since 1998. Prairie View won 15 games, and ranked 17th in NCAA Division I in total rebounds and 24th in three-point field goal defense. The following year, Prairie View advanced to the SWAC Tournament championship game again. In 2014-15, Rimm guided Prairie View to a 15-win season that included a seven-game winning streak. It was the program's longest winning streak since 1972-73.
In his third season with the Panthers, Rimm's team went 17-16, finishing third in the SWAC. It was the program's best finish in the league in six years. The Panthers advanced to the second round of the SWAC Tournament in that 2008-09 season, marking just the third time since 1998 they advanced past the opening round. In 2010-11, Rimm guided Prairie View to a third straight SWAC Tournament, and his team led the league in offensive rebounding. A year later, he guided a team with 10 newcomers to its best finish in three seasons and another SWAC Tournament appearance, while leading the league in rebounding. The Panthers were second in scoring offense and third in scoring margin that season.
"Coach Rimm will be the first NCAA DI head coach to coach in the Dallas Athletic Conference, and I strongly believe that he will continue the tradition of Eastfield basketball, which has the most National Junior College Athletic Association national tournament wins in the history of NJCAA Division III basketball," Fletcher said.
Rimm played at California State University, Los Angeles after beginning his college career at Ventura College. He began his coaching career as an assistant at Pasadena City College and Chaffey Community College from 1997-2000. He then spent one season at California State University, San Bernardino, helping the Coyotes climb to a No. 3 ranking in NCAA Division II.
Following his one year at San Bernardino, Rimm took over as the women's head coach at Texas College. His team won a school-record 20 games that season. He returned to the men's side the following season, guiding Jarvis Christian College to a 47-39 record over three years. The Bulldogs made their first NAIA National Tournament appearance in more than three decades during Rimm's first year at Jarvis. Rimm took Jarvis to two more Red River Athletic Conference Tournament appearances over his final two seasons in Hawkins, Texas, before becoming an assistant coach at Prairie View in 2005-06.
