Bio

Dexter Young was named head men's basketball coach at Dallas College Eastfield October 10, 2022.

In 2023-24, the Bees went 18-14 overall, 6-4 in the Dallas Athletic Conference, making an appearance in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III South Central District semifinals for the second straight year. They received votes in the final NJCAA Division III rankings of the season. 

In Young's first season at Eastfield, the Harvester Bees went 21-8 overall, 6-4 in the DAC. Eastfield advanced to the South Central District semifinals. The Harvesters were ranked as high as No. 2 in the NJCAA Division III rankings, and finished the year at No. 9. Dwayne Reliford earned NJCAA Division III Honorable Mention All-America honors. 

Young previously served as the head coach of Premier Academy Prep School boys varsity team, which maintained a schedule featuring eight of the Top 25-ranked teams in the nation.

In 2019-20, he was an assistant coach at Houston Jack Yates High School, which went 26-3, scoring 100 points in 21 straight games. Yates put together a 23-game win streak, and captured district and regional titles before COVID-19 shut down the season.

Prior to his time in Texas, Young helped run international boys basketball camps for Kingsbridge Education Group in Shanghai, China. He also coached for the COSUN professional team in Huizhou City in the Guangdong province of China from 2017-19.

In 2016-17, Young was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Feather River College in Quincy, California. He coached two All-Americans and four all-conference selections, and was part of a staff whose team advanced to the California Community College Athletic Association state tournament, finishing third. In 2015-16, he was the head boys basketball coach at W.E.B. DuBois Public Charter High School in Fresno, California.

From 2013-15, Young returned to Chicago State University as a special assistant to the head coach. The Cougars finished third in the first year in the Western Athletic Conference, authoring a season that produced the third most wins in school history.

A year prior his return to Chicago State, he was an assistant coach and head recruiting coordinator at Fresno Pacific University, which went 21-9 in the Sunbirds' first year at the NCAA Division II level. His recruiting class in 2012-13 included two NCAA Division I transfers and the National Junior College Player of the Year, helping to record the program's first unbeaten (13-0) home record. Fresno Pacific won the National Christian College Athletic Association West Region championship, earning the No. 1 seed at the national tournament. The Sunbirds finished second in the Pacific West Conference. 

From 2010-12, Young was a student assistant coach, and handled player personnel matters at Chicago State. In 2009-10, he was an assistant varsity coach and head freshman coach at Hyde Park Academy in Chicago, where the Thunderbirds won the Chicago Public League Red-Central title before advancing to the public league tournament semifinals.

Young played semi-professional and professional basketball in Europe, Asia and the United States from 2001-09. He had stints in the American Basketball Association, Continental Basketball Association, Slovakia, Austria and China. He earned All-American honors at Porterville Junior College and Point Park University. 

Young earned a bachelor of science in recreation at Chicago State and a master of science in kinesiology at Fresno Pacific.

He is married to Carrmilla Young, and the couple has five daughters, Dominique, Katrina, Myah, Cierra and Destiny.
